Understanding Welded Wire Mesh

Prefabricated steel reinforcement for efficient concrete construction

Welded wire mesh sheets

What is Welded Wire Mesh?

Welded wire mesh, also known as welded wire fabric, is a prefabricated steel reinforcement material. It's made from steel wires that are arranged in a grid pattern and resistance-welded at each intersection. This creates a strong, durable, and uniform sheet or roll that's used to reinforce concrete, providing a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional rebar.

Types of Welded Wire Mesh

Welded wire mesh is available in two main forms, each with its own advantages for specific applications:

Rolls: These are continuous lengths of mesh that are coiled for easy transport and handling. Rolls are typically used for large areas like concrete slabs, sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots. Their continuous nature reduces the number of overlaps and cuts, which can save a significant amount of time during installation.

Sheets: These are pre-cut, flat panels of mesh. They are ideal for applications that require precise dimensions and for smaller projects like concrete decks, patios, and precast concrete elements. Sheets are easier to handle and place in confined areas.

Typical Standards & Grades

Welded wire mesh is manufactured to specific standards that ensure its quality and performance. The primary standard is ASTM A1064, which covers both plain and deformed steel wire for concrete reinforcement.

Mesh is available in different grades, with the most common being Grade 60, which has a minimum yield strength of 60,000 psi. Some manufacturers also offer Grade 65.

How Welded Wire Mesh is Sized

The size of welded wire mesh is designated by a series of numbers that define the spacing and gauge of the wires. The common designation is written as:

Example: 6" x 6" 10/10 D1.4 5' x 150'

- 6" x 6": This indicates the spacing. For example, a 6x6-W2.9/W2.9 mesh has a 6-inch by 6-inch grid pattern with both longitudinal and transverse wires having a cross-sectional area of 0.029 sq. inches.
- 10/10: This indicates the gauge of longitudinal and transversal wire
- D1.4: Type of wire and size. "W" stands for a plain, smooth wire, while "D" stands for a deformed wire with indentations for a better bond with concrete. The number stands for wire size
- 5' x 150': Width and Length of the roll or sheet

Common Usages & Applications

The versatility and ease of use of welded wire mesh make it a fundamental material in many construction projects.

Residential & Commercial Slabs: Essential for reinforcing concrete slabs for foundations, garages, basements, and commercial floors to prevent cracking and improve structural integrity.

Paving & Overlays: Used in roads, sidewalks, and driveways to reduce temperature and shrinkage cracks and enhance the durability of the concrete.

Precast Concrete: Ideal for reinforcing precast concrete products like manholes, culverts, and septic tanks due to its uniform and predictable properties.

Decorative & Architectural: The clean, grid-like appearance of mesh also makes it suitable for non-structural applications like fencing, gabions, and decorative wall panels.

Invoicing by Piece

Welded wire mesh is typically sold and invoiced by the piece (per roll or per sheet), rather than by weight. This provides a clear and predictable way to order. While a standard piece count allows for an estimated load weight on a truck, the actual number of pieces loaded may vary due to size and type. Your final invoice will be adjusted based on the exact number of pieces delivered, ensuring you are billed accurately for what you receive.
